Less than satisfactory reference :(

Discussion in 'New teachers' started by emp1982, Jan 4, 2011.

  1. Hi Guys,

I was due to start my new job in a few weeks and go in this week for some introduction days, anyway I received an email from the new head stating that the reference she received from my old head was less than satisfactory!!! And it apparently said that they wouldnt re employ me.

They want to meet with me ( new school head and deputy) to discuss the reference and try to resolve the issue. They have sent myself and the old head a evaluation of teaching form where I need to highlight my strengths and highlight areas for development.

The issue I have is that I have had wonderful feedback from my NQT mentor, and this is evident in my file . I had a good rating from OFSTED ,positive observations from my mentor and even one from someone at the County Council. I was always punctual, professional etc. I know that my other refefence was a positive one, I know I have areas to work on , but then I am an NQT and I am fully aware of those areas.

I called my Union and they said that I have every right to see the reference as I need to check that it is factually accurate and true. If it is not I have been advised to contact them again asap.

I am so upset, I know that the old head took an instant dislike to me as soon as I started on a personal level but I cannot believe that they have the evidence to write this reference. Also regarding the point that they wouldnt re-employ me- they already did ! I only had one terms contract and they asked me to stay for a second term! Also the head has never observed me teach.

Any advice for this meeting later this week would be fab :0) I think all I can do is go in with my head held high, my evidence of good observations, NQT assessments and generally be positive about my teaching career.

I am hoping that the old heads untrithful reference will not ruin my career :(

  3. Don't panic- most people recognise malice when they see it. Talk to the new head- be honest. Perhaps even ask if your mentor would have talk over the telephone with the new head. I have (unfortunately) met quite a few bitter, malicious people in teaching but there are lots of good honest people too.

I would take a witness because I bet the Head will have a secretary to record and witness all that is said. Are you a member of a Union - ask their advice.

The really positive thing is that the new Head is not just taking the reference on face value and wants to meet with you to discuss this. This gives you the opprtunity to present your side of mthe story. If the reference prevents you from gaining employment then you do have legal redress

  6. hi,
thanks for all your comments :D When I spoke to the union they didnt mention a witness, they just said to take in all my evidence as the evidence sounds alot to show that I have done well. I have just called the school as they are on a training day and got the old head! I asked her to ask my mentor to call me and she was all short with me as per usual. Anyway, I have emailed my mentor to ask if she was willing to talk to the new head if needed. Will see what outcome that has, as I am sure that the head will now go and give the heads up to my mentor.

I am feeling positive about tomorrows meeting as I have all the evidence that states I have passed my NQT assessments well and also that she has already re-employed me..... I just hope that the new head can see that it is malicious.

Is there anything I can do if I don't get the job? OR anything I can do if I do get the job as I don't want this reference to tarnish my career and I dont think it is right that someone in a place of authority can play with people careers and be so malicious.

    Thanks

Good Luck! Your situation sounds so unfair, do update us on the meeting with the new head.

  8. Ask for a copy of the reference and check it foor factual accuracy. If anything is incorrect you have a case against the olkd head/school. Given the level of your evidence it sounds as if there should not be an issue. Ask also to be allowed to write a response to the reference which can be filed alongside this reference to ward against future problems. Remember though that if/when you move from this new post ypou won't need to obtain a reference from your first employer, just your most recent employer.
If the current school decide to revoke the job offer on the basis of the reference then you are in a different situation and will need specialist help and advice and I'm sure your union would back action against the old Head.

  10. all went ok!the head was just confused as to why the two references were totally different! realised it must have been personal as my NQT file was good :D so pleased. also am starting earlier now(next week!) as maternity leave may begin sooner for the lady! Am excited/terrified about the prospect especially as I have no idea how the school day runs lol but I am sure that I will be fine ! ( I hope!) thanks for all your positive thoughts and advice :)
