Lack of work

Discussion in 'Supply teaching' started by xshellbellex, Jan 26, 2011.

  1. Hi all

I have been doing supply for a term and a half but was lucky to fall into a 3 days a week long term contract with a school. I never get any work for the other two days, this was a concern for me when I took up supply because of the introduction of cover supervisors is everyone having this problem? I think the area I live in doesn't help as there isn't many schools.

I could do with working 5 days a week but there just isn't the work about and I don't really want to do bar work to get extra money. What other work do people do if you can't get much supply?

    Thanks

Some of us are lucky if we get 1 day a week or even a month at present.
It does depend on your local area though, Prim. or Sec. in which case your specialism.
Some have given in & become TAs or CSs to keep the pennies rolling in. People have tried starting their own business or just taken on whatever work they can.
Jubilee would also remind you of the possibility of JSA if you work less than 16 hrs in a week.

  4. Can CSs register with agencies?

I'm guessing they would be paid less but probably not much less.

Yes the CS can register with the agencies and in fact many agencies are saying that schools only want CS for day to day supply work and not qualified teachers due to the need to save money. I must admit you have been one of the lucky ones to get regular 3 days a week, as already been mentioned most count ourselves very lucky to get 1 day a week.

  6. I would love to get 3 days a week in the same school so I think you should count yourself lucky and perhaps the agency thinks this too and so offers work to others in more need. I tend to get 3 and a half to 4 days a week at the mo so you're not missing out on too much else work really. I used to get 5 without trying but now I haven't met anyone who gets 5 days for quite some time.
