KS4 nurture group subject suggestions please.......

Discussion in 'Secondary' started by the night owl, May 4, 2011.

  1. Hi,
I am currently trying to put together a learning package of qualifications for a group of around 12-15 students who will be in year 10 from September. They are all currently in a nurture group and would until this year have taken English, Maths, Science (single) alongside a BTEC qualification. Most ( I am expecting 2 to pehaps be disapplied from English and possibly maths) will get G or possibly F in these subjects. Due to the 'lovely' changes surrounding the BTEC's etc etc... I now need to come up with 5 GCSE's for them to do to achieve 5 D-G passes. So far I have suggested adding Geography to the list, as a humanities teacher originally I am confident I can painfully with masses of coaching to the test get them a Geog GCSE. That leave me with another subject to find. These students are really really lovely and would have done well in the BTEC and would have experienced success for the first time for many.....'i'm loving Michael Goves right now'.........
    I digress
What I need help with is a subject that would be managable for these students to pass AND could be delivered in some part through supported learning via a non subject specialist teacher.
People have suggested ICT or Graphics does anyone else have suggestions, all greatly recieved...
    many thanks in anticipation

  3. At our school they did a City & Guilds course. Modular, so you can pick the bits you like. I don't deliver it, but to my recollection as soon as they have a certain number of modules they get a GCSE equivalence, with no external examination. The City & Guilds assessor comes in and checks it all. I think all our lot passed last year. They mainly did Graphics type courses which were effectively ICT.
The kids enjoyed it, very low level of skills needed from the teacher, and they all passed. What more can you say?

For the kids sakes, don't let anyone try to convince you that any DT subject might be a good option. The CA side of the subject is mindbogggglingly complex for lower ability students and is a hell of a lot of work (volume). Yes, they might engage well with the "practical" elements, but it is no longer the 70s and simply "making something" isnt enough.
