KS3 Resource from TeachICT - Starstruck - anybody using it?

Discussion in 'Computing and ICT' started by harry05, Oct 9, 2007.

  1. I am considering using the Starstruck material for KS3 teaching. It looks interesting and entertaining.

Has anybody been using Starstruck 1 or 2 in their school? Anything else out there that one should consider?

    Cheers

  3. Note that this is NOT Teach-ICT but a company selling their product. May still be a good product!

  4. They are two different set-ups I understand.

http://www.teachict.co.uk/ is by working ICT teachers developing usable resources to be used in teaching.

http://www.teach-ict.com/ is much bigger on Tutorials and info all round (well done Debbie!) and has a flashy front end (nothing wrong with that per se - although sometimes it distracts from the good content)

Starstruck seems a good set of tasks for a school not nailed down by KS3 requirements

  5. I wish they hadn't changed the "flashy front end".

Kids just want to play with the walking character and I waste time trying to get them to focus on the task. So I use the website less, even though it has brilliant and useful starters and plenaries.

  6. i don't know if this a right place, but i was wondering if anyone knows how to create drop down box in ms words

  7. In response to the comments above I have changed the design of the GCSE home page. It is a bit rough and ready as I've thrown it together in a hurry. I'll make it look better tomorrow (you might need to refresh your cache to pick up the change).

I wish more people had let me know that the flashy navigation was a problem. I have had a lot of emails from people who have said they love it and only 2 have complained so I didn't realise it was such a big issue.

The last thing I want to do is alienate teachers so that they don't feel they can put students on the site.

I'll look at changing the KS3 front page over the weekend also so that the little man will be no more.

He was only there as a bit of fun for the students, it was never meant to be a primary navigation aid as the main menu was on the left hand side. However, I can see how they would become distracted.

Hope that his removal will make you feel that you can put your students back onto the site.

    Regards

    Debbie

  8. No, not the right place nyxonuk (Hmm, seem to be running out of TES usernames eh!?) Look in Word help for that.

I think it's a good thing to have the teach-ict website appearence altered occasionally, it shows kids the different forms a website can take. I too think the 'less is more' approach is better. Maybe you could incorporate that interface into one of the revision games?

Keep up the excellent work Debbie, I'll try and send some new resources in again soon.

PS - Love the September caption competition, will you be doing others?

  9. Yep, there is a new competition up for October, its been there just over a week. You might need to refresh your cache to see it.

Had a lot of entries so far but most of them seem to be taking just a word e.g. computer. I was hoping more for items within a topic so that the mnemonics could be published to help with revision.

So if any of your students are entering, maybe give them a heads-up.

  10. Anybody on the Starstruck issue.....

    Cheers

Yep - we have been using it and it is really good - the kids just put their headphones on and get going - bliss !!

I think you create them via the 'insert' command menu.
