KS2 - more than one language?

Discussion in 'Modern foreign languages' started by antiloquax, Jan 11, 2011.

  1. Hello
I run an MFL department in an independent school and it has been suggested as a 'good idea' by a member of SMT that we broaden the languages offered at KS2 to include the three we teach at KS3 and beyond. Currently we do one language, French at that stage and can then set in year 7.

My own feeling is that too many different languages at an early stage may not be the best idea as it could cause confusion, especially as the current allowance is only 30 mins per week.

Does anyone have any similar experience or can anyone please offer advice?

  2. I completely agree with you. KS2 should offer a firm foundation to build on at KS3. I would think that that would be very difficult with just 30 minutes. If you teach more than one language at a time or run a carrousel then that foundation is going to be very shallow and confused.
