KS1 reading assessment

Discussion in 'Primary' started by hparashar, Aug 12, 2011.

  1. Hi - just wondered if any KS1 practitioners have found anything useful to assess reading, especially in Year 1. Our school is very keen to level children, so have bought in reading tests - which are a complete waste of time, and don't give an accurate picture of where children are at with reading. Our head is not happy to go down the APP route, unless we can back it up with solid evidence (ie tests) so APP is considered an add on rather than an assessment tool in itself - can anyone help?

  3. We use an older version of this http://www.nelsonthornes.com/PMreadingskills/pm_benchmark.html in FS and KS1, which we find to be very useful. There have been previous threads about it if you want more opinions on it

  5. What are APP grids if not solid evidence? As you have found, a test is an unreliable snap shot on a particular day. If APP grids are used correctly with evidence from guided reading notes etc they give a clear picture of a reading ability and level.
Sounds like your head needs a lesson in trusting a fellow professionals judgement.

  6. Thankyou for your help - both suggestions look good
Yirg - thanks, You don't need to tell me ;) !!
