Kindle hints and tips?

I have been given a Kindle for my birthday by my partner as we are due to go on a two week holiday and he was worried we wouldn't have had any space for (his) clothes!
I have unwrapped it and now await other half to 'de register' then 're register' it.
What handy hints could other Kindle users share?
I am not a technophobe but must admit that I have been extremely dubious about Kindle as I love real books.
Can you only get books from Amazon?
How can you get cheap downloads?
    Who decides on prices etc?
    Any hints gratefully received.

    I have realised my mistake!
Am enjoying reading the hints and tips on 'The Kindle Thread'
D'oh! Must read other threads before starting new ones.
    Sorry all.

    Never mind!
There are several Kindle threads - but you'll need a whole weekend to read them all!

The main bit of advice is to sign up for JungleSearch.
When you sign up, they send you an e-mail every day with the books that Amazon has put for free today. Some of these books are rubbish (well, some people may like them!), some are great. Often the reduced price is only for a few hours or days, so you have to check the price before you click to buy.

    Thanks for your reply Theo.
I have a week to get it loaded before my holidays.
    So many choices!
