keeping a steady beat

    Hi everyone,

    I have moved to an international school, most classes are great but I have one class giving me trouble; they are a specialist English intensive class which means that at the moment, none of them speak any English. At. All.

    I've started with a drumming unit and they are eager to join in but whenever we get a groove going we get faster and faster! Does anyone have any non-verbal or quick activities that focus on keeping a steady beat? We've tried passing a clap around to the metronome and they are slowly starting to get it but I'd like some variety if possible.

    I should add that they are a mix of year 6 and year 7 students

    Play music with a steady beat, eg Radetsky March and March, clap, tap on the beat.

    Perhaps they haven’t had much experience of doing this. Make it as practical and kinaesthetic as possible. Some Dalcroze-style activities would help, if you have space for them to march/walk/move in time with music - Dalcroze would use single crotchets played on a piano - can they walk in time with the piano notes?
    Once they get into a pattern, can they drum with their eyes closed so they are really listening to each other?
    Patience and practice will win the day.

    You can use the eraser end of a pencil to act as a drumstick. You tap it out to the metronome, and then let them imitate that. Keeping a steady rhythm is probably one of the hardest things to learn. Even with my high schoolers, if the drum line — who are supposed to be the band's metronome — get to running wild with it the whole band turns into a train wreck and quickly. Practice and patience will carry the day.

    This resource is intended to be used by younger children, but you could use it to get things going and, once the steady beat is established, introduce variations using different rhythms over the top.
