We are leaving Kazakhstan this summer, but the government has just decided that nobody but Kz nationals and diplomats will be allowed entry until further notice, not even people with work visas.

How is that our concern I hear you ask? No workers in means no flights out! Already Lufthansa have cancelled flights for next month, and we are desperately hoping they don’t bump flights further, since they are the one and only licensed carrier of pets (cargo) to the UK. We can’t stay in Kz indefinitely, school will only pay rent until end of June, and our visa to stay runs out end of the summer!

Almaty is a lovely city, but its isolation is becoming all to apparent now!

Our borders have been closed since the middle of March. No flights in or out...in theory.

What happened though...there were a number of repatriation flights by governments or groups of nations (there was a big debate if the brits could get on the EU one). There have also been a number of private charters arranged by groups (I think travel agents - certainly they have been circulating the details). Most of these flights are, in comparison to before, expensive, but not outrageous.

Follow on Twitter (horrid platform, but useful at present) the embassies of the western countries you think might be involved in repatriation. From our end the Dutch were one of the most informative, but could be very different there.

Get on the repatriation lists from British embassy. If there is one...(we had no list before this, but there is one now)

Get in contact with local travel agencies, whoever are the big guns in your area.

Ramp up your social media groups. No idea about there but the information here seems to be 99% through Facebook, WhatsApp and twitter.

Pets: unfortunately many have been abandoned or left in temporary care which is now stretching into long term care. None of these flights would take pets as cargo. They would take if small enough to travel with you in the cabin (in some cases). Rescue shelter is bursting at the seams now

Most (not all) people who wanted or needed to return to home base have done. The ones who are still here are those like me who have chosen to stay, a handful of people for whom the costs of the repatriation flights were simply too much and finally another small group who are simply waiting around for the next flight as they intended to see it out here but now circumstances have changed (job loss/dragged on longer than thought).

It certainly won’t run the same way where you are, but might be worth looking at some of these points.

All the very best and I hope you work it out.

You could be cheeky and ask your school if, now that the borders have closed, if there's any chance in you being able to renew your contract at least for next year. Chances are that if the borders are only being closed now, they won't be reopened in time for the start of the school year and the school might prefer someone who is there to someone who might be able to get there but might not. You would then have to get out of your new school's contract (possibly because you will be unable to get there!)

A bit mercenary, and it will mean someone elsewhere has a contract withdrawn, but ultimately your responsibility is to look after yourself.

I reckon that’s a discussion well worth having with the school.

Do you know the names of any websites that offer specific jobs in Kazakhstan or is it still mainly the TES?

Same in the UAE - there are lots of people here with no jobs waiting to get out, and others with valid visas stuck elsewhere waiting to get back in! Things are starting to open up now and more flights in are expected from next week. However, still no announcement regarding the issue of new visas. We are just hoping our new staff will be able to join in August, though expecting the quarantine period will still apply, and most UK staff have already given up hope of going back home for the summer, especially with four weeks of quarantine during their seven weeks of leave.

TES is best I believe. Our school is currently advertising on there for a few roles where people had pulled out over the coronavirus crisis.
