Job Spec's

    Is your job spec a generic one or is it specialised for a music HOD. Does it include provision for organising instrumental tuition and do people think it should be on.

    Mine is a generic one and doe not include Instrumental tuition, concerts e.t.c. I would be interested to hear of others.

  2. Mine is a generic HoD one - we all have the same in our school as I spoke to both the head of drama and PE where the expectation to run extra-curricular is the same as music. The reason behind it (I spoke to my line manager) is that extra-curricular is run on goodwill and we don't get paid for it, and therefore it doesn't go in our job descriptions the requirements of which we have to fulfil.

    Now being retired, I no longer have my original contract as Director of Music from many decades ago, but it was something along the lines of arranging instrumental tuition, concerts, music for chapel services and teaching singing, with a little footnote that I might also be required to teach music classes if so directed by the headmaster!

    actually, "music appreciation classes" !
    A gramophone was provided for the purpose ...

    We have a generic teachingjob spec. and then more specific HoD spec. The HoD spec does include some specifics such as managing instrumental staffand mentions 1 major performance per year. As I do more like 10 or more performances per year its a little pointless but I like to feel that if in the future my good will disappeared I could cut my work load down without infringing my contrat of employment.
    The staff in my department are involved in many of these perfromances too but do not have anything stipulated in their contracts.
