Job offered retracted

my daughter who completed her pgce this year had been offered a NQT job and had begun preparations to relocate then had the job retracted as one of her referees stated that she had difficulties with 2 teaching standards . Her new employer told her that this would prove to be a difficulty in going forward with her NQT. She has QTS - met the standards to complete ! Is this something that can prevent her getting a job - or is their something she can do to prevent this happening with subsequent applications.

This is really upsetting. And as you point out, daft since she has proved that she met the standards in the end to gain QTS.

Firstly I hope that she joined a union and has paid her union dues so she's still in it. In which case she should get in touch with her union regional office to discuss challenging this reference.

If she is not in a unon it us too late as they will not provide support for something that happened before joining.

    Join a Union. Yes, now!

Then look at who the referee was. Is it someone she could avoid having as a referee next time? Is there someone else from a placement that she could use?

That could be a solution next time.

And to help with her jobseeking, here's a whole raft of advice articles for her.

I've included some which are not relevant to her for the benefit of other people reading this.

Thank you for your response which I will forward to her. She had been asked to attend for meet / handover and was arranging this when she was informed that they were no longer offering the post! I am a teacher of 30 years and was always of the opinion that the purpose of NQT was to allow the newly qualified teacher develop and hone their teaching skills ! I also can remember too well my abilities when I first began teaching !!!

I hope that the reference can be challenged with union help, but if not. odentifying an alternative referee would be the way out for the next job.

    Best wishes

Jobs offered are subject to a satisfactory references so that is the loophole often used to retract an offer.
The requirement upon referees is that they provide accurate , factual references so if there were difficulties with 2 standards then this is accurate. However the reference obviously applies to the teaching placement and has been superseded by her gaining QTS. This is one of the problems in providing "old" references she really needs a reference to reflect her current practice .

It won't help for this job but in future if she has to use those references could she get there first by mentioning them in her covering letter e.g. throughout teaching practise my main challenges were.... by working with my tutor and by volunteering in local schools I've been able to work on these areas by.... showing... That way the references won't be a shock and when they read them they will think thats fine as she's aware and showing self improvement/initiative.
