Job Interview - need help!

  1. Hi,

    I have an interview coming up this Friday for a position teaching Drama and a bit of KS3 English. I am a Drama specialist and have never taught English, and sure enough they want an English lesson for the interview...

    The lesson is 25 mins to 14 mixed ability Year 8s, they want: "using drama within the lesson, get the group to engage with and enjoy either a very short extract of Shakespeare or a poem of your choice."

    My instant thought was Macbeth, looking at the language in one of the Witches scenes, possibly using soundscape to set the atmosphere as the 'drama' element. But I've developed the fear that they'll have done it 15 times and will be totally bored...

    Can anyone suggest a better, less known idea?

    Also, could I have some suggestions about the type of drama activities English teachers would normally do? I'm used to full blown drama in a studio, I'm a bit lost with this!

  2. Try the opening scene of Caesar - 2 tribunes against the whole class. The class can be divided into 4 groups and told to devise their slogans for chanting... build up the soundscape prior to the beginning of the scene and then introduce the text. PLay on the humour and the **** taking of the plebs leading to the infuriation of the others - then see if they can draw links between this scene and their school experiences.

    Sounds awful like this, but I have made it work in the past.

    Reading a scene with different acting instructions was a great activity I learned at a The Globe CPD session. Use the scene between Caliban and Prospero in Act One Scene Two and pairs read:
    - pointing on all pronouns i.e. point at themselves when saying 'I' or at the partner if it's 'thou' etc.
    - Prospero whispering all lines and Caliban shouting
    - Caliban avoiding Prospero's eyes (and then opposite).
    Then they can evaluate which was most appropriate and the impact of text on stage rather than just reading it.

  7. 7 ages of man speech - as u like it - could make for good drama task? bit long tho maybe?
