Is fear affecting your work?

    Do you feel there's a lot of fear in the teaching profession currently? Is this new? Do you work (or have you worked) in a school where there's a 'culture of fear'? Does fear of inspections, exam results, accountability, being seen to be underperforming etc impact on your ability to do your job – or indeed, your health and happiness? Or perhaps your experiences are quite the opposite and you don't feel any major fear in your job and work in a positive, supportive school environment? Here at TES, we're working on a feature for the magazine about fear in the teaching profession – how common it is, what causes it, what impacts it has, and what can be done to avoid it. We'd love to hear your comments from the frontline about your experiences around this.     I feel that almost all of what I do is down to fear. I teach in a small independent school. There are few behavioural problems but the school is now a business and every student is important as they are more money. Therefore, the parent is always right and you daren't annoy a child or parent because if that child left it would be down to you. I am constantly worried that what I am doing is not good enough as we are always being told about teaching perfect lessons, etc. I just can't do that on my timetable. I think that my head would like us all to have no lives outside of school. His expectations are unreasonable especially to a part timer with a heavy timetable with two children at home!

    Punitive measures of accountability - drop in observations, pupil voice used as evidence to lambast the whole staff, and it all started with academisation and the bullying and constructive removal of expensive staff or staff who gave in after v little pressure, or staff who said WHY? FEAR FEAR FEAR even to the last day of each term!
