Interview next week, 8 weeks pregnant...

Discussion in 'Pregnancy' started by cathersc, Apr 25, 2012.

  1. Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had any advice? I applied for a job a few weeks ago, just before I found out that I'm pregnant. Well the process took ages as there were the easter holidays inbetween but basically I have just heard that I have an interview next week.
I really REALLY want this job (particularly as my current workplace are making loads of people including probably me redudant- I think either way I'd get the statutory maternity pay). It's close to where my partner and I will be living, it's my exact perfect specialism and the right kind of school for me! Plus, the job is part time so it'd be perfect for me to do when I came back from maternity.. the trouble is, it's only a fixed term contract for 1 year, so really I'd only be working there a few months and then the contract would run out. I'd have to really impress them to get them to take me back but I'd worry about that later I guess!
Thing is, for now, I'm not really sure if I should be upfront with them at the interview. By law they are not allowed to discriminate against me because of it, but I can't help feeling like if I don't get it, that will be the only thought running through my head. So if I were to get it, at what point would I tell them about the pregnancy? I don't want them to think I was lying about anything... and I would make it clear that I fully intended to go back after 9 months if they'd have me!
    Thanks in advance

You are right, they are not allowed to discriminate.. but, if you tell them, and you don't get the job, how would you PROVE it was due to your pregnancy... lately I went for an internal promotion and the only other male candidate was offered the post. I was informed it was cause I had enough on my plate with my heavy load of A'Level teaching... but, even my line manager said to me it was cause I am expecting (and was 6 months pregnant at the time) - however, what could I do??
I advise you to go to the interview, do NOT tell them, Wow them and then keep fingers crossed that you will be offered job! Good luck!

  3. Go to interview and don't tell them. 8 weeks is very early; you wouldn't necessarily have told your school at this stage.
Good luck and let us know how you get on!
