Innovative project ideas

Discussion in 'Design and technology' started by M.Brookes, Jan 27, 2011.

  1. Hi,
Wonder if anyone has any ideas? Trying to think of a positive way to overcome the budget cuts facing our dept.
Pupils in year 7 and 8 currently move between areas making a RM, Textiles, Graphics, electronics and food project. This works out to be quite expensive over the year. They spend about 8 weeks in each material area - make something small to take away.
I had an idea that we could make one larger project that combined RM, Tex, electronics and graphics. We could focus on quality rather than quantity and less repetition of the design process. Pupils would see it as 'product design' rather than discreet material areas. Teacher would move with the pupils - get to know them well - continuity etc.
Teachers already move around with pupils in year 7 and this works really well - but was thinking that one quality product would be the next step forward.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated!!

  3. Great idea. We used to make a bag with a pewter cast feature (zip puller, brand logo etc) which was popular with both genders. Based the design on a design movement or a cultural symbol to focus away from sports brands. No reason why you could not include a flashing light warning system for safe use at night or an alarm system to keep younger brother out etc.

  4. That sounds fantastic! Thank you!
