Inference and deduction

  1. How do you teach inference and deduction? Thinking particularly about Year 6 but any advice would be great! What kinds of questions do you ask? Feel like I am asking the same sorts of questions all the time and would love some help to start thinking in different directions. Any ideas about how to get creative about this would be great too.

    Here are some question roots drawn together from KS2 and KS3 tests marked as assessing Inference & Deduction (AF3) which we use:

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Explain the use of the word?</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">What impression do you get
    of the feelings of this character from the text?</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Why did??</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Fill in the thought bubble:
    what might this character have been thinking?</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">If you made a movie of this,
    what type of music would you use for it, and why?</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">How are the experiences of
    these two characters similar?</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">Why did he feel??</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">How did the character feel
    before? and after??</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">How did the characters feelings
    change?</font>

    <font size="3" face="Times New Roman">What would you buy / do / see
    / ask? Base your answer on evidence from the text</font>

  5. Whenever I am reading through something with the children, I will ask them to explain, eg: how the character is feeling? What time of day / year is it? How do they know? Must use evidence from the text to deduce answer. I always use the terms inference and deduction, and the children are really good at this. The following is a good exercise to use with the children:

    LITERAL questions - we can find the answer directly in the text.

    DEDUCTIVE questions - The text does not actually tell us the answer, but we can work it out from information the text gives us.

    INFERENTIAL questions - The text does not actually tell us the answer, but we can work out the answer by considering the hints and clues given.

    AUTHORIAL INTENT questions (what the author has done and why) - we need to think about what the writer was trying to tell us, and how he/she went about doing it.

    The sentence below is taken from ?A day in the English countryside?.

    1. How light was it? (Literal)

    2. What three things did the cow do? (Literal)

    3. What time of day was it? (Deductive)

    4. Where was the cow? (Deductive)

    5. How do you think the cow might have been feeling? (Inferential)

    6. What do you think the cow was expecting? (Inferential)

    7. What devices does the writer use to give us so much information in a single sentence (how has he written the sentence)? (Authorial Intent)
