In Harmony and Wellbeing

    With the recent Prime Minister’s speech on Life Chances and developing his new Life Chances Strategy the In Harmony programme offers a model to support reaching and supporting young people and helping to support and access the very issues the Prime Minster has highlighted and looking to solve.

    According to an analysis of 400 published scientific papers, the old adage that “music is medicine” may literally be true. Canadian psychologists from McGill University have shown that the neurochemical benefits of music can boost the body’s immune system, reduce anxiety, and help regulate mood. The review, which appears in Trends in Cognitive Science, was prompted by the growing number of studies addressing evidence-based music interventions as opposed to music therapy. For example, the researchers discovered 15 studies in which cortisol, a stress hormone, dropped after listening to relaxing music.

    Happiness is an area of increasing interest to policy making in the UK - part of the bigger picture of national ‘wellbeing’. For example, the UK Office of National Statistics now has a programme of work dedicated to measuring and understanding our wellbeing, and the What Works Centre for Wellbeing has been established to help us better understand the conditions required for all of us to be well and happy.

    In Harmony Telford and Stoke on Trent is a social development programme delivered through music in two communities in Telford and in Stoke on Trent since 2012 funded by the Department for Education and Arts Council England. The programme is inspired by the El Sistema programme from Venezuela and delivered by Telford & Wrekin Music (lead partner), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Manchester Camerata.

    The aim of the In Harmony programme is to develop active, sustainable and cohesive communities using the power and disciplines of community-based orchestral music-making and learning. In Harmony projects use the power of music-making to enthuse and motivate ‘at-risk’ children, families and communities so that:
    · children improve their skills, attainment and ‘life-chances’
    · families improve their well-being
    · communities improve their cohesion and mutual respect.

    During 2015 we commissioned as a In Harmony partnership a research report looking at the wellbeing impacts on our young people on our programme. This report contains seven case studies of young people involved in the In Harmony Telford and Stoke project. It evaluates the way the young people interact with the programme and considers the impact of the programme for children with additional needs. This was following on from a report commissioned by In Harmony Liverpool which found:
    “Data on children’s emotional wellbeing demonstrates a continuing positive trend and this can now be compared to data gathered from other In Harmony programmes through the Arts Council England (ACE) commissioned NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research) national evaluation. Data on wellbeing includes: Children reporting improved self-confidence, teamwork, aspirations, cooperation, resilience and enjoyment of school and music, and a sense of belonging, captured through focus group and case study interviews and termly online wellbeing surveys.” (page 7, In Harmony Liverpool, Year 4 Evaluation Report)

    Generously funded by Youth Music and researched and authored by Rosie Rushton, In Harmony Telford and Stoke on Trent's report contains analysis of the well-being and involvement of children with additional needs. This report provides a brief insight and summary of the impact of the In Harmony Telford and Stoke--‐on--‐Trent (IHTS) programme on children with additional learning needs. It aims to provide an evidence base of the impact on a sample group of children with a diverse range of additional learning and support needs, as identified by their respective schools, accessing the programme at various stages.

    In Harmony as a programme supports our young people's wellbeing through a mixture of approaches looking to support social outcomes and not just musical achievement such as music breakfast clubs to start the morning to start the day healthy in mind as well as a healthy breakfast a range of after school music groups to help support developing confidence, teamwork and new friendship groups, a range of performance opportunities and community volunteer programme.

    The key points from the In Harmony Telford and Stoke on Trent report highlighted:-
    · All learners show obvious signs of enjoyment
    · All learners are provided with regular opportunities to achieve; achievements are transferred and shared in other parts of the school day and at times into the learner’s home environment.
    · In Harmony Telford and Stoke on Trent provides alternative opportunities for self-expression, leadership skills and social communication and interaction for learners who find verbal expression challenging.
    · In Harmony Telford and Stoke on Trent is having a positive impact on the confidence and social skills of learners and these skills are transferred to other areas of learning
    · Parents of children involved in the In Harmony programme noted the positive impact it is having on their child’s enjoyment of music, confidence and sense of achievement

    As David Cameron highlighted in his recent speech‘ we need to think big, be imaginative not just leaving behind the old thinking, but opening ourselves up to the new thinking’ new ways of working and engaging our young people, In Harmony offers one example which can support this vision and support developing the whole child.
