Ideas for phonics classes for 2 1/2 - 3 1/2

    I'd still love to know why this has to be done on a half hour a fortnight basis. Who suggested this?
    Surely the conversations, stories, songs, rhymes and so on are a natural daily thing. A friendly and articulate staff, a 'print rich' environment, loads of books and opportunities for mark-making - aren't these the things that any children's centre worth its salt will be doing every day anyway?
    By the way, in our nursery class we have several children who are being supported as early readers/writers. It's not as if we hold back those who have an aptitude. But the thought of all those little ones having 30 minute lessons is bizarre, and the OP hasn't really explained her/his original post.

    No I don't understand either where this idea of once a fortnight is coming from, and what is going on the rest of the time. On the one hand it sounds as though there are some very "advanced" children, but then in another post as though there are some speech and language issues and like they are going to be teach children aged 3 who can't yet speak intelligibly letter-sound correspondences.
    Are the parents pushing for something or other?
  4. when people say they have very advanced children they seem to think that you need to sit them down and start teaching them things like phonics when they are three. It is much more important to get bright children thinking and being active. Set up problems for them to solve, working alongside them encouragng their thinking skills by open ended questioning; get them to make up and reinact stories; get them designing and making from a range of resources; encourage complex imaginative play and get them to make their own props These type of activities will have a huge impact on their intellectual development. You need to get parents on your side by explaining how children learn and how they can help at home. At the same time you can do a little phonics teaching for very short periods, say at the start of a story session with children who are ready and interested Half hour sessions are totally inappropriate regardless of how fun your activites are!

    There is nothing in the OPs posts to suggest these children are advanced only that they have been taught skills beyong their level of development which over time leaves a deficite better to work on appropriate skills such as language development through stories songs and play than to jump to sound letter relationships.
    I asked earlier if the OP or any of the staff had phonics training perhaps the OP might be able to answer?
