ideas for mental starters year 1

Discussion in 'Primary' started by KarrieGem, May 21, 2011.

  1. Hi,
I could really do with some ideas for starters for year one class, particularly looking for some fun, quite physical ideas that don't really need any resources like whiteboards or anything.
    Any ideas?

Stamping and clapping as you count in 2's, 5's, 10's.
Run/ move round when you clap and shout a number they need to get into groups of that size then shout halve/ double.
Give each child a number card and tell them to find a partner to make 10/ 20.
Questions along the lines of 'what is the day after Thursday? Run to the door for Tuesday, the board for Friday, the window for Sunday' I do this with numbers too so ' What is half of 20? got to the door for 10, the board for 8, the window for 40'
I'll probably think of some more in a minute.
  3. Thank you, these sound good.
