ICT IGCSE course - Edexcel v CIE. Which is better?

Discussion in 'Computing and ICT' started by ZaphodFJ, Sep 11, 2011.

  1. Taught CIE for a year:
    - more detailled than GCSE
    - good official book now available
    - good support
    - practical exams need lots of practice. If you have good kids, you'll be fine.

I taught the entire course in a year, with around 2/3 of the teaching time I have for GCSE. That was 3 hours/week.
With 1 hour/week - you will cover the theory, but have little time to explore anything off the specification. I had plenty of time to chat about non-exam stuff.
1 hour per week might leave you short of time to practice for 2 practical papers and a written paper. If you can negotiate time for a few full-time practice runs, you should be fine. If I could do it again, I'd have had them doing a full paper each week, timed, for around 6-8 weeks prior to the exam.
Even for GCSE, 1 hour/week seems minimal!
