Just found out I'm teaching IB Music next year and have until tomorrow to put in any requests for suitable reference books. Does anyone already teaching IB have any suggestions please?
    Many thanks in advance

For you, or for the students?
    - Sadly, the IB doesn't 'do' a music textbook. What you need is a book that covers the history of music (classical, world, popular/jazz), including CDs for listening examples...
The Enjoyment of Music, Norton Publisher. You can also get an accompanying 'quiz' book, to test students' knowledge of the topics studied.
    Kamien's Music: An Appreciation
    World Sound Matters
LISTEN by Joseph Kerman and Gary Tomlinson
History of Western Music, Grout - this one comes with an online system, where students can listen to musical examples etc.
    - The students will need a solid grasp of music theory, to be able to analyse pieces of music, so some sort of theory book - perhaps the GCSE Music Literacy Workbook?
    - Anything you've been using for A level will be good background too. Students need to have excellent listening and analysis skills, so anything that covers musical elements, and listening skills will be needed too.

You might also like to buy the Cambridge guide to Jupiter Symphony - useful background info for one of the set works.

Thanks Silverfern. Already have LISTEN and an old copy of the Grout. I take it the latest edition of the Grout is a 'package' of book + online resource? Is it an on-going annual subscription?
At present there are only 2 pupils planning to take the course and both are well on with ABRSM Grade 6 theory.
Will have a look at/order the titles you suggest.
    Many thanks.

  6. Have you been sent on an IB training course (somewhere in the world!)? They're very good and full of useful info. Get in touch with the IB and ask to be put in touch with their Music specialist.

No. Apparently I have to do it 'online'.

    check your mail :)
Also, definitely go on training. I went on level 1 (in florida) and level 3 (in oregon) and they were SOOO useful.
