    That's nice!

Apparently an 18 year old Russian girl has fallen in love with me and wants me to fly her over so that we can "delect each other in our undying love".

    Shame I am too busy.

I never get these e-mails. I think it's something to do with not clicking on certain links and having decent passwords.

    No idea CK.
I have a very strong password and don't ever click on links I'm not 200% sure of.
These scammers just get hold of your email address and pop off an email.

I'm sure I read somewhere that all Linkedin's emails have been hacked. Some of you might be on that. Personally I used to reject every invitation to join it that I ever got.

FWIW, it is more to do with the address books on other people's computers being hacked than your own computer.

I am obliged to do an annual safeguarding refresher course, which I did today. Interestingly, it had a link to a video of an old dear who received a scam letter announcing she won thousands of pounds in a competition she hadn't entered.

The scenario the video painted of how things subsequently panned out for her was virtually identical to that one one of my residents who'd gotten herself into financial difficulties by believing her life was about to change for the better.

Hanging these b.astards is far too kind for them.

I once worked in an art gallery where the director got one of these letters and thought it was real. Seriously, a Royal Society nearly gave them bank details.

One of the main sources for spammers are people who keep address books and contact lists on their e-mail software.

Once the spammer has gained access to the contact list they have another pile of addresses to spam. It's why you sometimes get spam mails from apparently 'friendly' addresses.

It doesn't matter how careful you are, if someone you know has your address in their contact list, it's open season.

Speaking for myself I'm still waiting for all my friends to see the compromising videos that someone said he took through my webcam. The simple fact of my computer not having a webcam has not deterred his repeated efforts to blackmail me.

That might explain it. I'm an antisocial grump so few people have my email, and I neither twitter nor youface.

Plenty of entertainment can be gained by playing these people along. Not for the technically uninformed, nor for the faint-hearted, however. Some very satisfying stories out there about the "Microsoft" scammers having their computer networks disrupted........

I think you should reply inviting him to stay with you as a thank you for his kind generosity. All he has to do is send you £1000 to help pay for the airline ticket and transport from the airport to your house. You could even promise to take him on a sight seeing tour of London and introduce him to your 18 yr old unmarried daughter who is looking for a kind and generous man to marry. You could have such fun!
