How soon to ask for a sabbatical?

To be brutally frank and bring in the headteacher's perspective - there's only something in it for the school if the teacher concerned is outstandingly good and you don't want to lose her/him. I've been in this position as a head - a superb young teacher told me he was planning to resign to go and travel for a year and I actually offered him a year's sabbatical, because he was that good. He took it, returned and it was most definitely in our interests.
I can see, however, that with many other teachers - and given the over-supply of champing-at-the-bit NQTs there are around - I'd just refuse and they'd have the choice of resigning or staying.
