How often do you formally assess in KS3?

I'm trying to look at the balance of our assessments in foundation subjects, and would be interested to know what happens in most secondary schools.
How often do you complete a formal assessment task in KS3 - especially Y7?
Are these levelled? Feedback given? Recorded? Tests or 'coursework'?
  2. Our students complete an assessment at the end of each unit of work, which is roughly every 6-8 weeks, depending on the length of the unit. This usually comprises of two sections, one which tests source work skills and one which is a knowledge based piece of writing. Both sections are levelled and recorded on a dept markbook and on the front of the students assessment book. Students are given a target of how they can improve next time, and refer back to this target before completing the next assessment. Hope that helps!!
