How does maternity pay work

I started my lecturing position (College) after Autumn half term last year and I would like to know how maternity pay allowance works? I'm not yet pregnant but was thinking of starting a family in the coming year and would plan to take 3-4 months off as maternity leave. I'm a little unsure of my entitlement to paid leave or/and statutory maternity pay, how it all works and where I would find out this information.

I don't want ask my employer, because I am concerned they might disadvantage me taking on further responsibilities if an opportunity for a promotion was made available to me. I have worked in secondary schools and with the council previously, but have taken a gap of employment to enhance my CPD. So I'm assuming I would be treated as a teacher in their first position.

    I hope someone can help.

    Thanks in advance
