How are you assessing reading?

In practical terms are you sitting with groups of readers during guided reading sessions and using objectives list/grids/ticksheets to do formative assessment as you go? Are there any tests that can confirm teacher assessments?

We have bought in a very complex online assessment tracker but it doesn't distinguish between Y3/Y4 or Y5/Y6 objectives and we are finding it difficult as a school to know how to measure the pupils' progress when we don't know their starting points on the new non-level 'levels'...

    Confused. Very.

We use Accelerated Reader - excellent resource for both guided and independent reading. Assessments are as and when a teacher thinks it is necessary and the data produced is comprehensive. The only issue is the cost - its not cheap. We've paid 3K for 400 licences for 1 year.
