Hope is the thing with feathers
    That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
    And never stops at all

    Emily Dickinson

Was reading a collection of E D's poems this morning and this one brought me to tears. It is so profound and so simple and I thought some of you might like it.

I find hope rather pathetic compared to action.

Hope. The last resort of the desperate. And the religious.

Hope is also the first resort of the lazy.

How sad and cynical that xena warrior and Eureka feel like this.

Oh I don't know - maybe we are just curious. Nothing is cast in stone....

In what way do your assertions imply curiosity? And what do you mean by nothing being cast in stone? That sounds a bit wishy washy to me - as if you said something but now you are suggesting maybe you didn't mean what you said.

I meant what I said. But I am curious as to what you meant. Me I'm dead harrrrrddd!

I'm interested that you find the opinion of something that obviously conflicts your own errrmmm.... hope of hope "sad". I find it freeing and rational and obvious. If you can supply a reason why I might wish to change my opinion I will be actually very grateful.

    Cast in stone?

Paradox about hope, is that once you are freed from it's tyrannical constraints . . a new form of joy emerges.

Why would you be grateful for a reason to change an opinion that you find freeing and rational and obvious? I do not have an 'errrmmm hope of hope'. I have hope and that is something quite different.

Can it be bottled at all?

I have never found its constraints tyrannical.

No. 'Fraid not. Were you thinking you might get drunk on it? Or use it to dye your hair?

It's the same with oxygen. We don't realise how dependent we are on it until it starts to run out. It's a chemical/biological tyranny.

I wonder what a bottle of hope might taste like. Intoxicating, to the say the least! Here! Swig on hope!
