Hi all, I have an interview coming up for a HOD position. I was wondering if it is a total no-no to contact (by email) the current HOD to ask for additional information about the dept so I am more clued up for my interview/ whether it would be completely frowned upon by the head/ school etc?. Not much information was given away in job advert/ description and there is little info on the school website for the dept specifically.
    What are your thoughts?
    thank you!

Only in teaching could this happen.

Why shouldn't you be able to ask about the department? It must be better than you turning up and going away after 10 mins. Saves a lot of time all round if you know what your doing.

Disclaimer: This is a sensible approach but common sense is not always an asset in teaching.

It depends on what you want to know! If it's simply how many staff, are any part-time, number of non-specialists, staff who also teach another subject on the timetable...etc - I'd say sending an email to the HOD (who can then either answer it or not) would be fine.

If, however, what you had in mind was (for example) if thee are any staff in or on the brink of capability - or other sensitive stuff - then no, you shouldn't.

Had a little giggle at @Middlemarch 's reply!

I would add: don't ask their opinion of the Head, DHT, AHT, nor if there are any internal candidates.

    Best wishes

    Forgot to say:

    Well done for that interview!

Have you found the Professional Advice Hub with the advice articles on interviews? Including a much-loved article by @Middlemarch , I will add.

If not, tag me @TheoGriff and I'll give you the links.

    Best wishes

Thank you all for your replies! Yes, it was just general info, much like Middle march's suggestions. I must admit to snorting half my tea when I saw the latter part of the comment! The interview advice section is brilliantly helpful, thank you!
