    Hello

I have the chance for promotion to HOD (I am currently second in maths).

Does anyone have any advice, or potential interview questions that I should be aware of that will help on the day?

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Start with the job description - can you give an example of a time when you have done each task, or can talk about how you would tackle each task? Do a similar thing for the person specification - what evidence can you give to show you meet their requirements?

Be prepared for a question about how you have held a staff member to account or perhaps how you have supported a struggling teacher to improve.

Maybe something about how you would manage staff such that they feel valued and committed to the school.

Have a close look at the latest OFSTED report. Consider how you would tackle the development points from the report through leadership in the maths department.

As with what the other posters have already said, you have an advantage as you know the department already and I'm assuming you already have ideas in mind what you plan to do if you get the job.

Expect questions around your previous experience, what you could bring to the department and school as HoD and your vision.

I would not use this a 'slagging' match for the outgoing HoD, just highlight what changes you are going to implement- kind of like a business plan.

Are you on good terms with the outgoing HoD? If you are unsure of something, double check with them before the interview, I'm sure they'll be encouraging their 2 I/c to get a promotion.

Remember, if you do the same year on year, expect to get the same results.

Lots of questions about monitoring progress and use of data. Analysis of recent / current results / predictions and trends / areas of improvement identified with evidence. How good is your department - how do you know - evidence? How to raise standards - evidence what you are proposing will work? Keeping standards high when you have a non-specialist in place covering for a long-term sickness. Ensuring teaching standards are high / consistent? Comparison of your school's data with similar schools locally and nationally. Where is Maths going - changes in the syllabus, direction of Maths? Dealing with someone else who applied for the job from the department and got the hump after you got the job. I hope the money is worth the extra *****.
