Which is a bit of a relief, as the first reports sounded like a possible sinking, which could have been devastating ecologically. I hope all ends peacefully

Its not clear from the reports I have read whether it is a hijacking or simply that some stowaways have made themselves known to the crew.

no, its not clear at all, except the crew are in safe rooms, and the tanker has been zigzagging erratically

"According to a source close to the shipping company, the crew were aware of stowaways on board, but the stowaways became violent towards the crew while it was off the Isle of Wight.

It is not known how many stowaways are on board.

The crew retreated to the ship's citadel, a secure area in which they can lock themselves, making it impossible for attackers to get in.

This is standard procedure during a terrorist or pirate attack, but there is no suggestion the crew were doing more than protecting themselves from the stowaways."

Sounds a low key event with just police and coastguard. the MOD say they are not involved.

Keel-haul them. Stow them in the brig. Make them walk the plank. Send them to Davy Jones's locker.

UK special forces were involved in dealing with the incident on board. Seven suspects have been detained after a suspected hijacking involving stowaways on a tanker off the Isle of Wight.

I wonder why; it's usually Marines/SBS from Poole for this sort of thing.

All better choices than mixing it with the SBS!

I'm wondering if they will claim asylum? Migrants no longer arriving in small rubber boats but in ruddy great oil tankers.

I suspect you could be right.

The stowaways, believed to be Nigerians seeking UK asylum, were handed over to Hampshire Police on Sunday night.
