High blood pressure

  1. Went to GP today to get results of recent bone density scan and had my blood pressure taken by the nurse - it was sooo high even she was shocked! I do not really understand the figures but my first reading was almost 200 over something, then came down to 170 in a second reading. Apparently ir should be round 120 so I have to go back to the GP on Friday for another reading.
    I am now a bit worried having done some browsing on the Internet, my reading are at the top of all the charts and I am fully expecting to drop down dead any minute!
    So, the diet will have to start NOW and I discuss any other changes to my life style with the doctor. The nurse said I could cut down on caffeine but I only have one cup of coffee a day, prefrring to drink water during the day but I do have a can of coke each eveining so maybe that will have to go. I will have no problem cutting down on alcohol as although I enjoy a drink, I can take it or leave it really. The research I did said that my BP is so high that I should not start to exercise without advice from my GP - now that really has got me worried!!

    I was kept in hospital overnight last week and my blood pressure was constantly monitored (mine is low but that isn't why it was being monitored) - in the 24 hours or so I was on the machine my blood pressure varied by around 50 on top and 30 on the bottom reading (the high readings weren't at all high compared to most folk).
    Like I said....it's too early to panic.
     
  3. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Blood pressure is a funny thing and varies a lot. Mine is always raised when I go to the GP but is usually fine when I take it at home. It is when it is constantly high then there is cause for concern. My oh blood pressure was really high and they did alsorts of tests and basically they weren't concerned. He just has to watch his weight and try and exercise. They will check quite a few times before they do anything about it. Why not get your own monitor and check at home. They are really cheap and well worth having.
     
  4. My blood pressure is controlled by taking one tablet per day. Don't worry 6 years ago my BP was well over 200 over 120 this was caused by stress, my Dad was dying at the time.

A single blood pressure reading such as this might well turn out to be "white coat" hypertension, i.e. your blood pressure was temporarily raised because you were anxious about the visit to the doctor and it would have returned to normal (or at least to a lower level) after the visit (or when you relaxed). This phenomenon is well known to doctors and is common. The best thing to do imo would be to purchase a home blood pressure monitor (get one with an arm cuff, not a wrist monitor) which will coat you about £50 from Boots. In this way you can monitor your blood pressure throughout the day. If it does turn out that your systolic pressure is around 200 then your doctor will almost certainly put you on medication right away. One thing to do now is to cut back your salt consumption to around 5g per day.
     
  6. You have two readings. The top one (200/170) is the pressure your heart exerts when actively pumping. You can put this up by exercising/worrying/rushing to get somewhere/hating the doctor -almost anything really.It gets higher as you get older too. It shouldn't be constantly high though.
    The bottom reading is the pressure when your heart is at rest ie between beats. This is reallythe one to worry about as it isn't affected by anything except weak hearts (low) or furred veins (high). It should be between 70 and 90. Any idea what that was?
     
  7. Caffeine is not that big a factor. The biggest one is salt intake and lots of things have high salt that you dont always think about. I have white coat hypertension and normal bp is 130/80 so not mega-low. I've never had a top reading of over 160 though - yours does sound quite high to me. I would definitely ask for 24 hour monitoring, then you can see what it really is.
     
  8. Not too sure about that as the bottom figure does alter a lot during a day. Mine for example can by 100 at the doctors yet at home it is between 65 and 85. Also I once had a fainting do and it went down to 45. I was visiting someone in hospital at the time so they rushed me to casualty. My heart was fine. They did lots of checks. So what made it go down to 45? It wasn't a weak heart. I was told it was because I was too hot. I think both figures are important but they do change a lot at different times of day. Mine is always lower in the evening than in the mornings. It's higher if I have just drunk coffee. Stress, I believe can cause a change in both top and bottom figures.
     
  9. The doc is doing the right thing by investigating further. My BP has been raised for about 2 years now - about 140 over 95ish, which is borderline mild hypertension. I had one of those ambulatory BP monitoring devices fitted last year and it took readings every 20 minutes for 12 hours or something. When I went to see the doc about it he showed me the results and I could tell him exactly what I was doing when the high readings were shown (bottom set year 9, rushing around the room like a dog with it's **** on fire) and rushing to the next lesson.
    His first suggestion was to lose weight. Which I did, then put a load back on again. However, I have since done some digging around and apparent the AD I am on is linked to high BP. Teaching is stressful and I am rather overweight, so no wonder it was raised.
    Haven't checked it for a while - will wait until they call me for my well woman check before I start worrying about it.
     
  10. Don't worry too much. As others have said, that alone can keep BP raised.
    We have a friend whose BP is always 200 / 110 and always has been, the whole of his 65 year long life. Apart from being a grumpy old man he has always been fine, even climbed twoers as an engineer for a couple of decades!
    If your GP gets worried he will send you off to the cardio specialist to be wired up - one of our very sporty students just spent time wired, very amused he was not!

    My BP is the opposite of yours, always low, 102/60 yesterday taken by the Practice Nurse. She was a little shocked as it has never moved from 110 / 65. I have never had any symptoms such as dizziness etc, but every time it is taken by a new nurse I have to explain that it is normally that low - short round women aren't supposed to have low BP it seems.

    Sorry, I meant to illustrate that 'normal' may not be your measure. Just make sure you get ot checked again soonish and leave it at that!

    Goodness...that would be high for me! [​IMG]
    mid 80s over mid 50s for me...with a resting heart rate of mid 40s - in the past I've had nurses change machines that they thought were malfunctioning because my pressure is so low.
