Help with KS1 DT 'Moving Pictures' topic?

  1. On a previous placement my class were doing this (they were mixed Y1/2).
    Firstly, they looked at pop up books and how different parts of the book moved (slidy things that made people move, spinners that changed the face of a person, pivots that made an arm move up and down) then they spent a lesson each on looking at how to make different movements, and then their final lessons it was an assessed independent(ish) lesson where they had all the resources they would need to create the different movements, and they chose what they wanted to do with it.
    If you searched for it (I suppose it would be called paper craft or something like that) then you would be able to find instructions on how to do the different movements.
    I would say you need to be really clear and exact with instructions, make sure you model exactly how to do it first, and have as many adults as you can get away with (scissors and paper fasteners are sometimes adult responsibility in KS1 - they are at my current school anyway!).

  2. As a started I would be showing them some examples of moving pictures within books. Then make a simple sliding mechanism (we make a owl where his eyes open and then close) and then because we cover this topic at christmas we link to our cards and make snowmen that firstly have a drawn face and then when you slide it along the childs face moves onto the snowmans. They love it. You could link to easter and have bunnies bouncing along.

    I linked this with traditional tales in literacy.
    First we looked at examples as previous posters mentioned, then we did a simple lever mechanism for Jack climbing the beanstalk, then we did a slider mechanism of the gingerbread man running away! After that the children chose which of the 2 mechanisms they wnated to use for the 3 billy goats gruff. The last 2 weeks the children worked in groups to produce large scale (sugar paper size!!) moving pictures to retell Cinderella. Each group had a different part of Cinderella and they had to include at least one lever and one slider mechanism. So for example the group that had the start of the story did Cinderellas broom on a lever and the ugly step sisters on a slider!

    There is a unit on moving pictures showing you how to break the unit down (a bit of a blow-by-blow account really).
    You can use their ideas but adapt to fit in with your topic.
