Help-advice needed about Dubai!

Discussion in 'Teaching overseas' started by KS4lady, May 2, 2012.

  1. I am currently in the middle of a job offer from Dubai - subject to my references being ok (that was Monday). The school have not asked for references still and I am beginning to wonder how on the ball they are. Is this normal practice for schools in Dubai?

One of the assistant head teachers had a big talk with me today about working for profit making schools and how much they may expect of you outside of school hours, how much of a role parents play etc. He also added that I should take note of how organised the school are - in other words maybe this school isn't.

I would really like advice on this as I really want to teach in Dubai and have a new challenge but I don't want to make any silly decisions.

    Any advise would be helpful.

    Thanks

  3. Hiya!

I have worked in Dubai before.
The pro profit schools are very much on the side of pleasing the parents. Usually they have large class numbers of 30-38 too to maximize profits.
I have a school offering me a job too and they offered me a job, signed the contract and then contacted my reference after. So i wouldn't worry about that.
Yeah it does depend on the school in question. Can you tell me the school name?
If it is an outstanding school british curriculum then they have a lot of planning outside of class hours. Just depends.
With all that said, I loved working there. I enjoy the lifestyle in Dubai itself. And international schools have children from everywhere which is a nice dynamic. Usually the children have a very high standard of english also.

  4. Hi there,
Just reading some threads here. I've taken a sabbatical from my teaching job, and want to work as a secondary school teacher in Dubai. There aren't a whole lot of openings in the better known, fee paying schools apparently. Have sent on my CV, but it seems I'm a bit late!
As you lived there, what other schools are decent or recommended?
Any and all advise is most welcome !
