Has the recession changed your diet in any way?

    I recently read a a brief article, probably on the BBC website, that suggested the foods available on the supermarket shelves have been modified to accomodate the fact that food costs have increased and pennies have to be stretched further.
    It would be logical, although I've not noticed this to be particularly the case in our area, which is generally an affluent one. What I've seen instead is smaller quantities within the packs rather than a trend towards less expensive cuts of meat and cheaper vegetables.
    Has the recession changed what you have been buying and cooking?

    Although I have to say a) I have always bought cheaply (not badly) and b) I haven't noticed anything of the recession yet (I will no doubt get a shock in the UK).

    I have drastically changed what we buy, how I cook and what we eat. I really look at the price of everything and stick rigidly to a shopping list. Before, I'd see daft things that took my fancy (like those multiseed Ryvita thins - £1.48 for 125g!!!!!) and just chuck 'em in the trolley without a thought. Not any more.
    I slow cook a lot more and use cheaper cuts of meat/poultry (e.g. boned, skinless chicken thighs in curries & stir fries instead of chicken breast). I also eat more cheap veg (carrots, bagie etc.) and avoid anything that's out of season. I can't believe a ruddy sweet pepper is 80p FGS!
    I've also become the Queen of the 'sin bin' and regularly do my shopping at odd times to take advantage of the bargains in the marked down section that are on or close to their 'use by' date.

    I've always been quite careful with our budget - Mr EG is a musician so sometimes jobs he does don't always bring in that much money. To be honest, most of the time he just about breaks even.
    I always shop at the butcher and (pre-pregnancy) fishmonger (apart from a couple of emergencies!) and ask them what thier offers are on a particular week. From this, I try and think about what I have in the storecupboard (which I'm sure would last me for years if I didn't shop at all!) and top up with fresh produce as and when I need it. I try and grow as much of my own vegetables and fruit as I can - I also preserve as much as I can for the winter months.
    I've always tried to shop ethically and frugally but I think that's just the way I was brought up. I haven't had to make any huge adjustments but obviously when the baby comes things may be a bit different!

    If you think that's bad, I'd hate to see what you thought of the price of peppers in our local supermarket!

    Ok but what is bagie?
    Like EG, my storecupboard would last me for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. I bulk up with fresh (seasonal) veg and rarely buy much meat anyway - and when I do, I have always bought cheaper cuts and slow cook.

    Yes a bit although it is more the fact that my own financial circumstances have changed than a general recession. I rarely buy the things I love now like blueberries, mangoes and avocados as they are too dear. In fact I hadn't bought a cucumber for about 6 months until recently as they were a stupid price too, I have always cooked from scratch and rarely buy meat so can't economise there. The most recent casualty has been orange juice - they have squash now on the whole if their 2-3 cartons of juice run out before I do the fortnightly shop. It will be a cold day in hell tho before I stop buying parmesan and red wine :)

    I may well disappoint in RL MM......I'm somewhere between boringly normal and barking mad! I do enjoy the finer things in life though and, on occassion, can afford to indulge! [​IMG]

    Always! Usually concoct some kind of pasta sauce with it and I've named it 'spagetti from the bottom of the fridge'!

    Mine's called "end of month rice" - very often involves homemade curry paste too. Very filling, very delicious.

    Like many CookeryTESers I was brought in a family with little (next to zero soetimes) money. We had good weeks and bad - pretty normal.
    We also learned to eat in season. I still can't understand the concept of importing strawberries in December. Bad for the environment, ruinously expensive and they taste of nothing.
    Personal circumstances meant that a few years ago I was again living on practically nothing.
    Things are a little better these days, but I still count every penny twice - old habits die hard!
    In colder months I have my weekly left-over soup. All those shrivelling and wrinkly vegies from the back of the veg tray and lurking at the back of the fridge will go in there along side a handful of soup-mix (lentils/barley/peas).
    I do a similar cold-soup in summer with squashy tomatoes and the last pepper and an onion that has started sprouting.

    So, my general attitude to food hasn't changed much with the recession. But there have been changes...
    One of our local greengrocers shut down. ...no longer able to compete with Tecos (bahhhh!). And I am again looking at the economic/ethical arguments in having a veg box delivered.
    Certain basics - eggs (which have to be free-range) and milk and fresh veg...which I can't manage without are going up in price, but I have to budget with no rise in my benefits (At some point I will have to undergo the despicable ATOS interview for my disbility benefits - even if they accept my GP and specialists reports - which is doubtful with ATOS - then I will be transferred to a different type of benefit with no rise for a year or two at least)
    And certain things - like the butchers own sausages that I enjoy as a treat are going up in price...more people are choosing to buy the supermarket cheap sausages, so the butcher has to put his prices up.

    CQ - cucumber?? Yes seriously. At nearly a pound a go until recently they were a luxury item. I grow my own in the summer but it would be nice to be able to afford salad items at other times of year. I do appreciate the argument for eating seasonally but it can get sooo boring in the UK if we dont buy any imported stuff.
