Grade Boundaries - GCSE Edexcel unit 3 terminal exam

Discussion in 'Mathematics' started by plunkett, Mar 25, 2009.

  1. Can anyone please direct me to a link for the grade boundaries for this paper at the foundation tier. I know 84 (out of 120) was the speculative score needed but would be grateful if anybody can provide more detailed information.
    Thanks

  3. Hi, I found this on the edexcel website. The red text is UMS scores and the blue is actual marks. Hope this helps!

thanks - this is what i thought too...
Also can anyone clarify for me.... I always thought was that there iwas a more complex relationship between raw score and UMS. I always thought that the UMS scores was weighted as to the level of the question answered, so a pupil who answered lots of easier qu's got a lower UMS mark than someone who got more harder questions correct??

  6. As I undertsand it the way they work out the UMS bounaries is to firstly decide what a 'broderline' grade A student would gain on the paper and also what a grade C student would get on the paper. They do this looking at lots of statistical data etc. on real student performance in the exam as well as looking at the topics the questions were one etc. so this can only occur after the paper has been sat by students.
Once these 2 key milestones are set then all other boundaries are worked out linearly so if an A was set at 80% and a C at 50% then a B comes in at 65%, an A* at 95% a D at 35% etc.
It doesn't matter where a student gains or drops marks it is purely on the overall mark.
The UMS points listed above are then allocated appropriately to allow students to mix and match bits from different sittings fairly (as some papers will be easier than other so a straight % would be unfair on those who sat the module a sitting when it turned out to be harder).
The method can lead to some odd situations where students can gain full UMS marks without getting 100% in the exam. For example if the straight line gives full UMS points for 95% then students getting 100% are no better off than a student getting 95% even though they did better!

A similar model applies at foundation where, I think, the fixed points are grade C and F.
