My understanding of operating the system is that you are given the Golden Hello to teach your shortage subject and the school have to confirm in a formal declaration you are teaching the subject for at least 50% timetable. Any alteration to this will need the specific permission of the funders i.e the TDA. You can try enquiring from them as they would need to provide an LA with written authorisation to proceed.

  2. A fellow NQT was not maths trained but teaching it. He was told quite definitively that he was not eligible for a golden hello.

You can only get the Golden Hello for teaching at least 50% of your timetable, after your Induction is complete, in the subject in which you were TRAINED.
You can undertake your Induction in anther subject but would then need to be teaching your training specialist subject for at least 50% of the time for at least a term in the 12 months after completing Induction in order to get the GH.
