General teaching room and one multi-purpose staff room

  1. <font face="Calibri">Hello,</font><font face="Calibri">Looking to others who may have experience of this&hellip; I work in a large 11-16 school that is in the process of change (BSF funding is still in place). Space is a premium as the school expands, and in order to maximise space the decision was taken that classrooms for the majority of subjects will be &lsquo;general teaching rooms&rsquo; (ie teachers will move, not the students). I can see that this is the correct decision given the circumstances, however if anyone has any advice on any potential pit-falls, I&rsquo;d be grateful to hear from you.</font>

    I could see problems with piles of exercise books / textbooks / worksheets / whatever if you're on the go, especially if the only place you can leave stuff is in the central staffroom.
    Other issue can be that if the students don't move around much they start to feel they have ownership of "their" space and it may difficult for staff to impose their presence and direction (especially if they arrive late as result of a diversion back to the staff room to pick up resources).
    Where will learning resources be kept?

    This wouldn't be my cup of tea either. Are all rooms to be shared by all depts or will they be split prhaps between 2 subjects. Things like text books are very heavy and having to move them back and forth would be a pain especially if you have no department base as such as so all resources must be portable at all times.
    Surely it would not be beyond the wit of man for the timetabler to give everyone at least 75% of their lessons in the same room.

    What about specialist rooms such as labs and workshops. presumably they will still exist?

    My proudest moment ever (in 20+ years) when when a student complained to me that walking into my classroom was "like walking into France" - as a MFL teacher I was thrilled to bits and encouraged him to get his parents to "complain" to the Head.
    How do we create that subject-specific atmosphere without dedicated teaching rooms/areas?
     

  6. Thank-you for your thoughts, the territorial aspect in particular is not something we've considered.

    The rooms will end up a tip. In the Bsf Schools I have been in have all had glass offices so that people could see onto the corridor and jump out to help with any issues. Do think about plug sockets in rooms for ICT and the wireless network.

    I can't imagine how subjects such as Food tech, Science & Music which require a lot of equipment are going to be taught..... Or is it just textbook-led subjects which will share the rooms? I also think it will be much more stressful for the teachers if you have back to back lessons in completely different areas of the school - constantly running around and arriving late to lessons with the students already in the classrooms.

    Have you considered the H & Sissues? For example preganant teachers (we had three at the same time recently) having to walk painfully around, carrying textbooks/exercise books & other resources? Or, indeed, any teacher who might be unwell... Might well lead to more staff absence!

    I assume that there will be no display work as no-one owns the room. Or the first teacher in will fill the walls and then no-one else will be able to put anything up?
     
  11. I can't imagine working like that. We don't have our own room at our school and it is difficult enough for everyone (teachers and pupils) to move around. I always insist my pupils have to queue outside until I setup anything I need for the lesson. I have to greet at the door and giving them instructions as they walk through while I am checking uniform. It makes them feel that they walking into my room and working to my expectation from outside the room.
     
  12. If it's a BSF school the walls will be matt white and covered in scuffs and dirty marks. The only place teachers are allowed to put up display materials is on the designated notice boards.

    I'm glad my lab isn't like that - I love colour and posters and don't want to have to get written permission to put up what I want (I know BSF schools that do!)
