GCSE Controlled Assessment Edexcel Specification A - Help!

Discussion in 'History' started by HistoryGuy2012, Feb 12, 2012.

  1. I'm teaching GCSE for the first time. Its Edexcel Specification A Modern World History. The first three units are fine. But I'm about to start the preparation for the controlled assessment and will be marking it too. I would be very grateful for any tips from others doing Edexcel Modern World History controlled assessments.

  3. Hi I teach this controlled assessment. It's worth looking at the Edexcel subject areas page as Mark Battye the history subject advisor has put some really helpful advice documents up there. Mark is also contactable by email and twitter - he's very helpful.

  4. We had a horrible time with this when we first submitted in 2010. We have since switched to Edexcel B but the Controlled Assessment tasks remain the same. I recommend getting in contact with local schools who also do the edxcel board - you can moderate with them. The markschemes are ridiculously unhelpful - make sure you get as much training or time to moderate with colleagues who have had training as possible. The source-based questions are relatively easy once you understand what the examiners are looking for but Part A can really et pupils down because they simply don't know how to approach assignments like these.

  5. Hello
Make sure you read the teacher support book for your topic - they are on the relevant qualification page under 'Controlled Assessment' then 'Forms and Guidance'. Then watch the podcasts (generic and topic specific) on this link:
    http://www.edexcel.com/iwantto/Pages/podcast-history.aspx
Then read the Principal Examiners Reports for June 2010 and June 2011 (this one is very detailed) which can be found on the qualification page.
On the qualification page under 'Controlled Assessment' then 'Exemplar Materials' you will find two detailed Exemplification Documents containing actual student work on a range of different levels with comments.
The mark scheme is in the specification. This guidance document for students will help you to understand the requirements - particularly in part B:

This is another guidance document which will help explain part A:
    http://community.edexcel.com/history/m/gcse09-historyca/7149.aspx
And finally this is a recent training pack which we used for some regional networks:
