Attached is a small 4 slide presentation that "links" the new 1-9 GCSE grades to scores in the PISA international maths tests. It is really only for interest but possibly shows why the KS4 attainment performance measure for maths now focuses on grade 5 rather the the legacy C equivalent 4.

I wonder if the new harder GCSE will change the performance of English students in the PISA test. The brighter students might do better as they'll have done some more challenging maths. Those at the bottom might do worse as the harder content will reinforce that they "can't do maths".

Interesting set of scores on the 2018 PISA mathematics tests. Pupils' PISA scores in mathematics in England have significantly improved in 2018, the first time the performance has improved. Boys again outperformed girls. Lower achieving pupils made a greater improvement in mathematics than higher achievers. It could be the tougher new GCSE has had a beneficial effect. However even the conservative party (during a general election campaign) have said its too early to draw any conclusions and to wait until after the 2021 PISA tests.
