Many years ago during a mighty cold snap (-27ºC if I remember rightly) I got back to my flat in glasgow after a few days away to find that although the taps were still working, the outlets had frozen and my ground floor tenement flat was getting the water from all the flats above as the drains backed up :(
The bathroom carpet crunched when I walked on it because the water that had flooded onto it (yes, including from the toilet) had frozen solid. The central heating was frozen somewhere and didn't work.

My first thought was to book into a hotel and ignore it but in the end it seemed more sensible to spend the night there, occasionally chucking boiling water down all the plugs. The carpet was taken out and disposed of with the ice still frozen in so not as nasty as it might have been.

And oh, the relief, when i woke up a couple of days later to find it felt a bit milder and I could hear water moving...

There were big yellow icicles outside some tenement flats that winter.....

When I was younger I worked in a steel stockholders warehouse. The visiting drivers would use the toilets, and they often got blocked.:(

The foreman had a pair of gloves like vets use, that went from the wrist to the armpit. He also had a strong stomach.o_O
