Food heaven and hell

Discussion in 'Cookery' started by Bodegabuttons, Jan 22, 2011.

  1. A pointless thread I guess but out of interest in the style of BBC 'Saturday Kitchen live' what is everyone's food heaven and hell? [IMG]

Food heaven for me would be ... crispy pork, baked whole seabass, lamb curry, grilled salmon...

Food hell for me would be ... tapioca, brussels sprouts, cold egg (especially egg mayo sandwich).

    Food Heaven:
Liver and Kidneys served with Dumplings.
    Sauerbraten ....again with dumplings
    Chickpea and Mushroom Curry
Hot buttered Toast with Gentleman's Relish
Boiled Potato, Spinach and a Poached Egg
Pigs Trotters with Sauerkraut or Peas
Dampfnudel with compote and vanilla sauce. -....yep, more dumplings for pudding this time!
Just about any pud that comes with custard!

    Food Hell:
    Not much really.....but anything containing:
    Sweetcorn
    Olives
    Snails

(I also love Sprouts...especially in soup....and Tapioca Pud....and there's nothing wrong with an egg sarnie - preferably fried egg)

  4. I actually really like egg but just really hate it when it's cold. Hot fried egg is yum!

I have more heavens and hells to add but it would just take too long.

Heaven...too many to list, but must mention:
Roast rib of beef, medium-rare, with horseradish and roast potatoes.
    Foie gras and Sauternes
Hot toast with too much butter, with either Marmite or Gentleman's Relish
    Fried mushrooms on toast
Lots of things on toast, in fact, as I'll add a perfectly poached egg to that list.
Oysters, with absolutely nothing at all, save a glass of chilled vodka or Krug
    Steak and kidney pudding
A stupendous fish soup with aioli
Really good spaghetti adorned with nothing but the finest, sweetest butter and parmesan
    Barbecued sardines
Jamon Iberico with a bone-dry Fino
    Black pudding fried with apples.
    The perfect bacon butty

    Must stop there!

Hell. Hmmm. Not many. I hate Ovaltine, if that helps. Don't like melon, unless accompanied by prosciutto. I think that's about it. Oooh, liquorice too.

Right, I'm only going to add one more thing, as I'd happily go on forever, but I think my all-time, would die happy if it was my last meal, favourite dinner is probably:
    Double Egg and Chips.
Common as anything, but cooked perfectly, there's not much that can beat it, for me.

  7. Heaven: more or less anything!
    Hell:
    Olives
    raw tomatoes
    raw celery sticks
    oysters
    caviar
    raw meat or fish

  9. Yeah I'm not keen on raw celery either although maybe not as bad as to label it hell.

I'm adding to my heaven list:
    prawns, monkfish, sushi, ribs...

    In agreement with the following:
Must add strawberries picked fresh from the field in England in June
    Spaghetti vongole with fresh clams
    Moules with chips!
    Perfect bread and butter pudding
....................ooooh, I could go on and on.
Trouble is there is virtually nothing I dislike, except perhaps peanut butter sarnies and tripe!

  11. I agree, that is not an appetizing mix...

It seems a number of you hate the stuff I love: olives, anchovies, foie gras etc
    I "like" almost everything except:
    sprouts
    sweetcorn
    bananas
coarse green leafy veg (kale etc)
    fake meats

    I love:
most things with a strong flavour
    pasta
    rice
    garlic
    chilli

  13. Olives - [IMG]
    Anchovies [IMG]

Foie gras Is in between [IMG] It's ok, nothing to shout about.

Love eating rice with my food. [IMG]

  14. The killer question and nobody has mentioned it yet...
    Marmite.
    For me: Heaven.

  15. I know the adverts say you either love it or hate it but for me I really can't decide what I think of Marmite. [IMG]

  18. Yes. It is horrid.

  19. Add to hell list:[IMG]
    papaya,
hersheys (tastes like someone has puked into it)
    ...
