First week for an NQT

    My top tip would be not to bother with a whole week for activities to get to know the class; you will get to know them just as well, if not better, if you go straight into actual lessons. Have maybe a morning or half-a-morning to establish rules, routines, class charter etc. Then start teaching as normal. The children will like the structure, they will see what expectations you have in terms of work and they will pick up the class routines much easier if they are actually doing them.
    Go in a bit harder than they would expect, as it's easy to back-off later. If you spend a week doing nicey-nicey stuff, it will be much more difficult to get them settled into lessons.
  2. Agree with Sillow 100 % - straight in with the work, however you will need to think really carefully as to the routines and expectations you have for them. this is hard because sometimes it takes the chaos of everything going wrong before you realise what you SHOULD have said!
    think about things like - seating plan, giving out work/what will they do with books when they have finished work (pile in the middle of table? Special box?)lining up order for assembly (I like alphabetical by first name as you can always see who's in the wrong place!) Policy on pencil cases, Changing reading books etc. Think about routines class teachers had already implemented on teaching practice - there was probably a reason for them.

    Where class rules are concerned, why do a "happy classroom" recipe? That way you can make your expectations clear, but the kids feel like they have had input.
  4. Check to see if there is a whole school approach to rewards and sanctions. This would save you the hassle of creating something new and will mean the children will be fully aware of what the consequences of their choices would be.
    Also see if you can get in to your new class towards their time in year 4 to watch and observe to see if there are any little tips/management strategies their current teacher employs that you could adopt. It is the little things that the experienced teacher does not even know they do but will be useful to employ in your new classroom.
