First ICT interview - conditional formatting

  1. Hi everyone

    I have an interview for an ICT post after easter and it's my first one for the subject. I am an Art NQT (been doing supply this year) but Art posts are virtually non-existant in my area and I think my subject knowledge for ICT is actually better. I've done a lot of ICT supply this year including a longer placement which I've loved so I'm excited about the prospect of an ICT job but I know I'll really have to prove myself as it's not my subject on paper!

    Anyway, the interview lesson is 30 mins with year 8 on conditional formatting. At the moment I'm thinking maybe some kind of quiz or game made in excel. Although I'm a little worried that 30 mins might be too short and that might be the same as what other people will be doing.

    So i'm looking for some advice really, partly about the lesson (though luckily I have easter to think and prepare) and also the interview itself. As I am used to Art interviews (I've had a few) I am used to bringing a portfolio, but I'm told I won't need that for ICT. So I'm wondering what I should bring and what to expect?

  2. Oh and there are some nice videos on conditional formatting on Teach ICT - would this be bad to use in an interview? Obviously I will make all my own resources and lesson plan etc but I often get tongue tied in interviews when I'm trying to explain things!
     
  3. One piece of advice is to check what version of Excel they have - conditional formatting is completely different from 2007 onwards.

    That's a good thing - conditional formatting, along with creating graphs in Excel, is one of the things that's got more difficult in Office 2007, as they've added lots of pointless options and made the useful ones more difficult to find.
    (Unusually, though, I think that mail-merge, which has been on a downward spiral since Office 97, is actually a little bit better in 2007 - it's basically the same as 2003 but laid out in a more friendly way.)
     
  6. Please don't take this personally, but I think this kind of attitude has been the downfall of ICT. People think they can teach ICT because they are quite good with some Office products. A study to be presented in Autumn states just this - that poor ICT delivery (attributed to lack of subject expertise in anything else but Office Products) is turning young people off Computing related studies and careers. I really think if you need to ask about Conditional Formatting then you should stick to the subject you are trained in. Surely you picked that for a reason? I speak very good English, does that make me an English teacher?
     
  7. Play to your strengths, your background is art, think of something creative. Using the software tool, very very simple. Understanding the logic, fairly straight-forward. Applying the knowledge....there is the key and what they will be looking for. What can you do with this tool? A quiz or a game, as you suggest might do the trick. Aim for enjoyment. Do something you are confident with. Find out what courses they offer at Ks3/4 and how will your background support- if they are doing OCR/BTEC could you offer a unit more 'arty'. The lesson is key- at interview I would ask a question or two about your background and desire to teach ICT- I assume they have more techy bits covered in the department otherwise would not have called you to interview. Show willingness to learn, make it difficult for them to go for the safe option(s). Good luck.
     
  8. Well maybe you should have asked what my other qualifications are and why I want to teach ICT?

    I actually have an A level in computing, a GNVQ in ICT and degree in Photography specialising in digital photography and process. I did the Art PGCE as I didn't realise at the time that I could have done ICT (I thought your degree needed to be more ICT based than mine) I just knew I wanted to teach so I went for it. I then realised once teaching that I am actually better at ICT and enjoy it more, possibly as I'm more confident with it. I also taught one lesson a week in ICT while doing my PGCE.

    One of my friends who teaches ICT has no ICT qualifications and degree was in Business yet they did the ICT PGCE so I don't really think your point is that relevant to me so I won't take it personally!

    I also never said that I didn't understand conditional formatting, just that I hadn't taught it before so I wanted to make sure that I deliver a good lesson that isn't boring or done to death.

    Thanks for your replies. I think being creative is a really good idea. I will double check but I think the school offer BTEC which I have taught quite a lot this year and I know there is a unit on graphics which I could talk about if it comes up. It sounds like the day will be similar to Art interviews except for the lesson and not needing to show a portfolio. Thanks again :)
     
  10. Like I said, don't take it personally. I have A Levels in a variety of subjects including Maths, Psychology, English. Like I said, doesn't make me a specialist teacher. Like I said, lack of subject specialism is one of the factors contributing to the demise of computing/ICT. That said, I'm sure you're very good at using ICT, I'm sure you're very enthusiastic about teaching it, and I'm sure you're as qualified as anyone else applying at your school.
