I'm a Y1 teacher and I'm a bit confused by profile data received from eyfs. I have a child who was emerging in CL but expected in other areas e.g. UW and SSM. Is this possible? Doesn't the child need to be able to talk and explain their understanding to be assessed at the expected level?

Hi there. I'm a moderator and I would pick this up at moderation. Typically the language rich elements of the profile would require speaking and listening and attention or understanding and so form part of the 'sense check'. It's worth having a conversation with the teacher about it. Has the teacher been moderated? There are occasions where it can happen but they would not be the norm. Eg EAL child who doesn't yet have command of English but does in their home language.
