Exploring Science KS3 Should I buy it?

Discussion in 'Science' started by thenortherner78, Jan 6, 2012.

  1. As a new head of science I am looking to buy into a scheme of work at key stage three. The teachers in my department are not terribly strong and I wanted a flexible approach to ks3 where staff have a good basis from which to plan their lessons (ie lots of resources and flexibility).

I have been looking at Exploring Science as I think I may. Give me the ba no of interactive resources and the flexibility that I need. I understand that the APP add on to this scheme may not be great.

Could anyone give me some advice? Is this a good solution or are there any others that I should look at.

We used exploring science for several years as a scheme. It was pretty good, lots of decent worksheets and different levels, tests that gave levels etc. The online resources were also good or you can get them on a CD. The text books also do the job and are accessible from the kids' point of view. However we started writing our own schemes a couple f years back but we still use a lot of the ES resources but we may have a yr 7 worksheet or chapter in a yr 9 lesson.

APP, if you want to do it, can be bolted on and there are planty of practicals you can adapt.

  4. Thank you for this advice. Please let me know if you have any further things to tell me as they crop up. I would really appreciate that.

  5. You could always find a nearby school who have already bought into the ES package and perhaps look at the resources first hand. What part of the country are you in?

I have used ES for 4 years and find it really good. I am in a middle school and we have been in the situation of a primary trained non-specialist teaching KS3 science. Both them and us as specialists found ES really useful.

  7. Spoke to Pearson at the ASE conference this week and they say exploring science is used in 60% of schools and is by far the most popular key stage 3 scheme of work.

  8. Thats great advice thank you.

With the KS3 science curriculum due to change soon (was Sept 2013, but now the whole thing is due to change from Sept 2014, so who knows?) make sure you push for discounts if you buy anything. It's all written, probably won't be updated again before it has to be changed and there won't be many new buyers I wouldn't think for the old materials. Play the sales people off against each other and see what they offer you, then make an offer.

  10. More great advice. Thank you very much.
