Experienced reception teachers please help I think I am going mad?

  1. I am an experienced KS 2 teacher new to reception.
    The head has said I need to hear 26 children read in an hour between 1.30-2.30pm and I need to do it twice a week. I have put some in groups but this is not appropriate for about half of them. Then if they are in a group and they haven't read for 2 weeks they don't take the same book home as their group.
    I can't do it and I am just going through the motions. I spend the whole hour clock watching. Is this how it is meant to be. I would never have done this with children in Year 6.

    not experience but am a YR teacher - that sounds bonkers, but remember that they don't have to read a whole book - just a couple of pages might do.
     
  4. What reading task is she wanting you to do in this hour slot?
    If it is individual readers thats 2.3 mins per child (not even taking into account any change-over time) I don't think a lot of high quality teaching is going to take place if you are rushing through readers like this.
    If you were to group the children into 5 groups of 5 or 6 for guided reading that would give each group 12 mins (again, not including change over time) which seems more managable at least!
    I find high quality teaching and learning never takes place in a rush!
     
  5. Do you think you would be able to ask the head why s/he wants you to do this impossible task?
    Is it possible for you to get the advice/support of an EY advisor/Literacy advisor or co-ordinator? They may add weight to an argument against this practice, which is not going to be of massive benefit to your children.
    I would be amazed to hear that any other Reception teacher was attempting this.
     
  6. I hear 20 children over a week. Quality not quantity. And I can't think of anything worse than starting a book and not finishing it with children. What's that teaching them about books?! They're just for learning to read, no enjoyment involved?!
     
  7. My children read, individually, twice a week. I have two LSAs that hear them all on a Monday morning (between them.) And then, we share them between the three of us on a Friday morning. We try to do guided reading once a week - with 2 in some groups and 5 in others. We always hear them read the whole book.

Why not say you've tried it this week or next week and say you couldn't manage it...could the headteacher or EYFS/KS1 leader take your class for this hour and show you how to get through all the readers! They usually back off when this is asked! Why is the timetable so inflexible? I think this shows they have no idea how long things take in Early Years & the value of taking time to look at and discuss small details in the illustrations and story.

  12. This is absolute madness! I have a full time EYP in my class and between us we hear each child read at least twice a week (we aim to listen more frequently to those children who do not read at home regularly). We also do guided reading for 2 groups and will probably have the whole class doing guided reading by the summer term.
    It is very much about quality time. You need time to discuss the story with the child to check for understanding but also to engage the child in the story.
    Why such a strict timetable? You have my sympathies.
     
  13. Reminds me of the child who was asked what his book was about. "it's not about anything, it's my reading book."

    How funny and how sad!
    Whilst I don't agree that you have to read a whole book [sharing whole books can be done at story time] I do think it's a crazy timetable that the OP should question in very direct terms during, perhaps, the Any Other Business part of a staff meeting. That will soon sort the sheep from the wolves.
    One hour? What planet is your HT from?

    Some heads seem to lose all common sense. I had a head years ago that wanted to make a class of 45 reception with 1 teacher and 1 TA (pre class size limit) One of the many reasons I gave him to disuade him was that I wouldnt be able to hear every child read, especially for the minimum of 3x a week as was the norm in those days.. He couldnt understand why. I had to show him the maths of min 5 mins per child X 45 x 3 leaves not alot of anything else all week before he would believe me and he was a maths specialist!
     
  16. It sounds absolutely crazy. I agree with asking the head to show you. In my experience (and certainly in my current school) heads often have no clue about what it is really like in EY classes.

    I agree with everyone here.I only have 20 children in my class and I take a whole morning to hear them read ! (once a week,my ta once a week and various parent helpers pop in and hear some children)
    thinking outside the box, ..you could ask to pair up your class with year 6 class and have paired reading.We used to do this in Australia,the whole school would pair up straight after playtime for 10-15 mins.I am not saying this should be done instead of adults hearing children read, butit has lots of positives for the children and school,social interaction,peer buddying etc the adults of course monitor it ,move around chat to the couples et

My own daughter is in reception and read each night, she can take between 5 - 10 minutes( or sometimes longer if she is not intrested) to read a book, definitely a couple of pages for any chance to get through all the children.

    I suspect this is the offshoot of the new year 1 reading test, getting them reading well in advance.

  20. Do you have an ETA? If so you can do your guided reading groups in this hour - and hear individual readers over the week. Guided reading should have either a phonics or a comprehension focus - phonics can be a game (bingo or treasure hunt for sounds for example). I agree you should be shown how to hear a class full of readers in an hour - ha! Good luck!
