Essential criteria - excellent attendance record - can a school ask this?

Looking to apply for a job. One of the essential criteria is - essential attendance record. I'm pretty sure a school can't ask this, can they?

  2. I'm not sure they are allowed to ask it, but I know any absence due to disability, pregnancy / maternity leave, and a couple of other thingshave to be ignored.

It's a pretty stupid thing to ask because how do they quantify it?

I once had a discussion with a manger after a 2 month absence (not teaching, previous life) and said the absence didn't look good. The manage thought the opposite. It's far easier to manage a single absence, even a long one than somone who comes in late three times a week, has the odd day off now and then.

Ask them what their criteria of 'excellent attendance' is
