I'm posting from Notting Hill and Ealing High School to see if your English Language A Level students would like to join us at a free A Level English Language conference on the 22nd January 2020?

As English Language is sometimes has a smaller profile than its literature counterpart, we thought it would be a good idea to bring together Language students from across West London to meet each other and hear from academics from some of the top Language and Linguistics universities. We also recognise it’s a time when the number of A Level students taking English at A Level is dropping nationally and we really want to showcase and promote what a wonderful subject it is!

We’re delighted to be joined from Professor Charlotte Brewer from Oxford University, who will be discussing her work on the history of the OED and particularly how language is affected by changing social and cultural contexts; Dr Sophie Holmes-Elliott from Southampton University, who is currently undertaking a joint research project looking at how teenagers are at the forefront of language change; and Dr Rebecca Woods from Newcastle University, who will be discussing child language acquisition and what we can learn from written texts (this is the area our students found driest and hardest in CLA and, having heard Rebecca speak before, am confident she can make it interesting!).

There is no cost involved - we just want to spread the love of English!

If you're interested, please email me at e.holmes@nhehs.gdst.net
