End of the road?

Discussion in 'New teachers' started by anon3150, Dec 13, 2011.

  1. I've reached the end of my 12 month extension, two terms of induction completed and no job for January. (I deferred my NQT year to teach overseas but having done some supply before I left I scuppered myself on the 16 month rule).
So until I find that third term I.....
beg the LEAs for a further extension?
    work as cover supervisor?
    apply for non-teaching posts?
    Wipe out my savings account?
I've had nothing but nice things said about me this term and really feel like I'm getting in to my stride as a teacher. Feel very down about it all. I'm perstering the agencies every day, I've sent of 30-40 odd job applications this term, there just doesn't seem to be amy work out there. Anyone going through similar?

Not in your situation, but just reminding you that recruitment will start being a priority for schools next term. Hang in there!

  4. Thanks....
I think I've just had a rough couple of weeks, I had the chance of a two term post in a school but they couldn't secure the NQT funding. Really frustrating to get that close!

  5. Hi,
Am in the same boat as you. I have been fortunate that my LEA has given me an extension until the end of the academic year. However, as you have found, find that post for the last NQT term is proving elusive. I am trying to hang on in there and hope a post comes up to be able to complete NQT.
This has to be the hardest thing I have ever done. My first school was not a happy experience and had a negotiated departure. Had a wonderful time on supply and learnt hugely. Started in supply at a fabulous school. Was accepted to work there and had to have a second operation on my hand. This required 10 weeks no driving and was, therfore, doing 4 hours round trip to get to the school for induction. Conseqently started the academic year already tired. I was so desperate to meet the very high standards at the school and worked myself silly. All of that and just sometimes events just conspire. . . . . So just looking for that last term.
Keeping everthing crossed that something comes up in a decent school after Christmas.
    Best of luck to you.

Yep in a similar boat but have recently moved to Aus in the hope of finding work.
If the new 5 year rule comes in then will that help you? I know some LEAs are offering further extensions due to the dire job situation, have you enquired about this? Best of luck xx

No further extensions are possible under the current regulations I am afraid. The plans are to change to a flat 5 years to complete induction after QTS this will not come in until April.
The busy period for induction appointments is Summer Term so make sure you do apply to any LA pools in your area- I assume you are primary and in the North?

You will be able to take Cover Supervisor work that will at least keep some money coming in and keep you in contact with schools. What rate do your agencies pay for CS as opposed to what they pay you as an NQT.
CS rates would be a big drop from my M6 LA supply rate but less of a drop for you.
Contact the LA advisor for your specialism and ask to be kept informed about maternity covers and other longer-tem tempoarary vacancies that they hear about.
