While washing the dishes last night I switched on Radio Four and found myself enjoying an adaptation of Fay Weldon's 'The Life and Loves of a She Devil'.

There, I've said it, although I suspect it had a lot to do with the talented Hattie Morahan:

    Radio 4 drama Vince?

    ...

    It'll be The Archers next.

Not likely, but Radio Four do produce some good adaptations from time to time:

I'm impressed by the 'washing the dishes' bit!

I enjoy the symmetric features of the bubble congeries.

If that impresses you, then you should see me changing the bedding and doing the laundry!

All to stave off the stack of marking sat 30cm away from me... hello marking.

    Hello marking my old friend
I've come to write EBI on you again
    Because SLT's vision is creeping
    Dream of marking while sleeping.
And dialogue is planted in my brain.
    SLT remains
    With the sound of marking.

In restless dreams I mark alone
With red pen on lined paper.
Neath the glow of halogen lamp
I turn my mind to hopes and dreams.
When my life was stabbed by a SLT wielded knife
    That split my back
And touched the sound of marking.

And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand teachers, maybe more
    Teacher marking without caring
    SLT hearing without listening
Teacher writing comments that pupils never read.
    And they never cared.
    Disturb the sound of marking.

'Fools,' said I 'You do not know.
    Marking like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my pen that I might reach you.
But my marking like blank pages fell
And echoed in the offices of management.

And the teachers bowed and prayed
To the marking god they made
And the policy flashed out its warning.
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, 'Failure to comply with policy will result in capability'
    And detention halls
And whisper in the sounds of marking

I use purple ink to mark (colour of the emperor, naturally)......

I still can't figure out why the OP is embarrassed.

I was disappointed as I had hoped for something a bit more juicy by way of a confession.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the poem, did you compose it as an avoidance tactic?;)

I did not watch it but if Baker played the debauched priest was then I might just seek it out.

It also featured a very creditable Dennis Waterman and Patricia Hodge, plus Julie T Wallace as the main character.

I thoroughly enjoyed fitting the words to the tune! So relieved it's such a long long time since I did marking!
